Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders Diagnosis and Treatment

June 12: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Participants will review the definitions of Substance Use, Substance-Induced, and Addictive Disorders. The 10 classes of substances will be examined before examining the five most common (Alcohol, Cannabis, Tobacco, Opioids, and Methamphetamine). Four new categories for diagnosis that were added to DSM 5 in 2013 will also be explored: Cannabis Withdrawal, Caffeine Withdrawal, Tobacco Use, and Gambling Disorder. Other topics covered include perspectives on the origins of addiction, signs of a substance use problem, screening questions, and assessments. The training looks at the principles of treatment and various treatment approaches, including Seeking Safety, Matrix, Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and Medication-assisted treatment.
