Why We Diagnose?

March 13: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The diagnosis of mental disorders is very different from other physiological problems. There are no tests, measurements, or scans that work as evidence for a mental disorder, yet a diagnosis is an important tool for both practitioners and clients. A diagnosis provides the road map for treatment planning as well as categorical information for health insurance companies, qualifying for Social Security Disability support, and job protection under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This training provides participants with an introduction to the historical context of mental health diagnosing, information on abnormal and normal behaviors, as well as tools for professionals who work with individuals and families with mental health issues.
